Skyclarys: The User Experience

Disclaimer: Please respect that these are the personal views of the patient.

I was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) around 2011, when I was 18. Since then, I have slowly progressed. However, due to low repeats, continuous physical therapy and rehabilitation, and intense sports, I am able to walk and live independently. Until 2023, there was no approved medication for FA. In 2024, Skyclarys was approved in my Central European country. I started taking it in April of that year with high hopes. Now, more than two years later, I can say that my speech and energy have improved, according to others and myself. I feel no effect on everything else, like walking and coordination. Some of us have elevated cholesterol values, so high that some take cholesterol-lowering medication and some have reduced the dosage of Skyclarys to 100 mg. So, one must be aware of the side effects. The benefits are highly individualized, if there are any. In my opinion, expectations are too high. I understand that some say the price is too high for the low benefits.  It’s important to exercise and do physical therapy. Without that, I doubt anything will change. Nevertheless, I would recommend trying it. It’s a good feeling to finally take something that science says can slow progression.
